Fridge Snacking on the Increase During Covid-19

The nation has seen an increase in fridge snacking by 40% during Covid-19 pandemic, according to recent research from Guy’s and St Thomas’ charity. With a change in routine and families at home for extended periods, it has become common to reach for snacks such as crisps, chocolate and biscuits. The impact of “grazing” on snacks will be an unhealthy increase in weight gain as well as potential dental problems. Dentists are warned to expect to see an increase in tooth decay and gum disease. Frequent snacking is detrimental to the health of our teeth and gums as frequent sugar exposure leads to acid attack and cavities. As life returns to a more normalised pattern we too need to reduce our sugar intake as well as the frequency of our meals and snacks. Aim for just 5 “acid exposure” a day; that is just 5 meals or snacks to minimise the risk of decay.

On the positive side, this time has been an opportunity for families to reconnect and to enjoy cooking and eating meals together.
